Founded under the name Busy Bee Airservice back in 1967, Norwegian has seen a number of name changes over the years before it began low-cost operations in 2002. Today, Norwegian is one of the largest budget carriers in Europe with 22 aircraft and close to 60 destinations, both domestic and international. The airline's main hub is at Oslo Airport, from where it flies to seven other domestic destinations throughout the country such as Bergen and Stavanger in southern Norway and Alta and Kirkenes right in the north within the Arctic Circle. From Oslo and a handful of other domestic destinations, Norwegian flies to major cities all over Western Europe including Paris, Madrid, London, Geneva and Rome. The airline also covers numerous destinations in Eastern Europe such as Moscow, Warsaw and Budapest along with popular holiday destinations on the Mediterranean like Kos, Mallorca and Alicante.

Norwegian has adapted a common budget model since it began low-cost flights in 2002. Would-be passengers can book flights in a few easy steps over the airline's website using a credit card, with prices starting around 40 euros one-way without tax and fees. All travel on Norwegian is ticketless. Passengers are required to reach check-in at least 30 minutes prior to a domestic departure and 45 minutes before an international flight.
Most of Norwegian's fleet of 22 aircraft, all Boeing 737-300s, is leased and most feature a tail fin painted with the image of a famous Norwegian, including Edvar Munch, the well-known painter of the iconic oil and pastel masterwork, 'The Scream'. Norwegian has planned to lease an additional two aircraft for the 2007 summer season and has lined up a host of new routes for the end of the same year, including Oslo-Tenerife, starting from October, and Stavanger-Warsaw, which begins from the end of December. Seasonal flights to Istanbul and Alicante are also scheduled.
