TUIfly - formerly known as Hapag Lloyd Express or HLX Airlines is a 100% subsidiary of TUI AG, the largest travel and tourist company in the world. The airline has its headquarters at Hanover Airport and commenced flight operations on 3 December 2002. Flights depart the UK from Birmingham, Manchester and Newcastle and fly direct to Cologne (Köln/Bonn), Stuttgart and Hanover. TUIfly also flies from Dublin to Stuttgart. TUIfly has a fleet comprised of 56 modern Boeing 737s, which are wholly operated by Germania and Hapag-Lloyd Flug, with everything from maintenance to cabin crew supplied by the aforementioned companies. All staff working on behalf of these companies are highly trained and offer skills and qualifications of international standard. There are few major European cities/destinations that are not covered by the airline's extensive network with the likes Paris, Rome, Frankfurt, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Menorca, Tenerife and Istanbul among them. The airline fills around 60% of its seats by direct sales with another 30% sold as part of TUI holidays and the remaining 10% sold by agencies.
On board with TUIfly, passengers will find a basic level of comfort and services aimed at offering relatively comfortable air travel at budget prices. There are no meals or refreshments provided but these can be purchased from the cabin crew at reasonable prices during the flight. In-flight entertainment is not normally offered as most flights are short-haul. The airline prides itself on offering the cheapest possible flights by cutting out any unnecessary overheads such as paper tickets, airport lounges, free refreshments or other complimentary services.
